I have noticed my friends and extended family members abandoning gift items, especially the housewares mostly because they are duplications of existing items. It may be that no family member is inclined to use them or does not fit into the mood of the homes. Many times people wait for occasions to pass on such gifts to others unnoticed by the gift-giver. My only considerations while buying gifts are not whether they are dear to me but whether they are suitable to the recipient.
Quality always comes first.
I would rather prefer to choose a qualitative piece of kitchen implement like veggie cutter or lemon squeezer with unbroken parts rather than a packed case of assorted wares with no knowledge of its contents.
LOOK FOR THE NEED OF THE RECIPIENT.
It is always better to speak to the recipient or their family in advance to assess their needs and likes rather than buying blindly. A mixer/blender/coffee maker may be an attractive choice. But it would be wise to gift a baking dish or a microwave owen compatible bowl she has always needed and not the good complement of mixer/blender series.
